Despite its high prevalence among the current and previous cohorts [42–47] and despite being a well-established risk factor for mortality in NIDDM [18,48–51] or IDDM [19] patients, albuminuria is frequently overlooked as a screening tool in clinical medicine. Our results reiterate the importance of appropriate detection and prevention of microalbuminuria and advanced nephropathy in improving survival in both genders [10,17].

Vijay et al. have reported duration of diabetes, systolic and diastolic BP age and serum creatinine levels to be associated with proteinuria while HbA1C was reported to be the risk factor by Gupta et al. [33,34]. In a study by John et al., male sex, age, longer duration of diabetes, poor glycemic control and raised blood pressure was associated with microalbuminuria [25].
