This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a project to minimize the adverse effects of the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal cancer. Laryngectomy is a surgical procedure which leaves the individual and family coping not only with a cancer diagnosis, but also with a major disability. The project incorporated a range of interventions to improve information and support provision preoperatively and postoperatively using a care pathway and clinical protocols. Provision of information and support was audited by means of a patient self-completed questionnaire and this indicated significant improvements in perceptions of information and support received one year after implementation.
