Healthcare quality and safety span multiple topics across the spectrum of academic and clinical disciplines. Keeping abreast of the rapidly growing body of work can be challenging. In this series, we provide succinct summaries of selected relevant studies published in the last several months. Some articles will focus on a particular theme, whereas others will highlight unique publications from high-impact medical journals.
Key points
Among 210 132 pregnant or birthing persons from 78 hospitals across 4 African countries, use of a bundled care intervention (massage, uterotonic, tranexamic acid, IV fluids and examination) and a calibrated drape to estimate blood loss led to a lower risk of severe postpartum haemorrhage, laparotomy for bleeding or death from bleeding. N Engl J Med. 6 July 2023.
Quantitative assessment of National Action Plans developed by 114 countries as a measure of the global response to antimicrobial resistance demonstrated heterogeneity across countries and little correlation between existence of a National Action Plan and tangible action. Lancet Infect Dis. 16 January 2023.
Dispensing non-prescription antibiotics in community pharmacies is highly prevalent worldwide and without substantial change over the past 20 years. Lancet Infect Dis. 24 April 2023.
Randomized trial of early detection and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
N Engl J Med, 6 July 2023
In March 2023, participants from more than 50 countries convened at the first global summit on postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Dubai.1 The need for a global forum for a single medical condition underscores the devastating impact of PPH. PPH is the leading direct cause of maternal mortality.2 Delays in the detection and effective management of PPH may lead to adverse outcomes. While evidence-based guidelines for PPH management exist and are frequently updated,3 these guidelines alone do not ensure automatic implementation with adequate fidelity.
In their international, parallel, cluster-randomised trial, Gallos and colleagues4 sought to assess the effect …
