BMI can be used to group individuals into a weight category such as underweight (BMI < 18.5), average weight (BMI ≥ 18.50 to <25), overweight (BMI ≥ 25 to <30), or obese (BMI ≥ 30). At the higher end of the weight continuum, overweight and obesity have been associated with numerous physical health risks, like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature death (De Onis, Blössner, & Borghi, 2010; Lauby-Secretan et al., 2016; Must et al., 1999; Must & Strauss, 1999; Reilly & Dorosty, 1999). A high BMI has similarly been associated with psychological problems, like increased risk of depression, low self-esteem, and poor body-esteem (Bell et al., 2007; Falkner et al., 2001; Gibson et al., 2008; Juvonen, Lessard, Schacter, & Suchilt, 2017).
