Safety and compliance with an emergency medical service direct psychiatric center transport protocol
2008, American Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Recent data suggest that the decision is clearer and may be more appropriately applied to the subgroup of psychiatric patients in whom the alternate destination is a psychiatric facility [3,8,9]. Emergency department physicians routinely perform extensive “medical clearance” evaluations for all patients who present to the ED with psychiatric signs and symptoms before referral for psychiatric evaluation or transfer to a psychiatric care facility [10-17,18]. Recently, these practices have been criticized as burdensome and often unnecessary.

2003, Obstetrics and GynecologyEnabling the diagnosis of occult psychiatric illness in the emergency department: A randomized, controlled trial of the computerized, self-administered PRIME-MD diagnostic system
2001, Annals of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :The sheet was paper-clipped in front of the section of the chart where the physician writes the history and physical examination notes. We did this to replicate Gold and Baraff’s10 successful intervention in our ED. Nevertheless, it is possible that the physicians, who are used to sorting through a variety of other papers (eg, demographic information, nursing notes) to find the one they need, may have ripped off the PRIME-MD sheet without reading it.
Recognition of depression in geriatric ED patients by emergency physicians
1997, Annals of Emergency MedicineDevelopment of a Brief Mental Health Screen for Intimate Partner Violence Victims in the Emergency Department
2007, Academic Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Several obstacles also exist to screening for mental health issues in the ED. These include the fact that emergency physicians are not trained to conduct psychiatric interviews,33 the busy and chaotic environment of the ED, and the lack of interest on the part of the physician. Despite the barriers to screening in the ED, previous research has shown that screening in the ED is not only possible but also beneficial for patients.
